Cape Wrath Challenges

22nd May 2010

We had been asked by a friend of mine & fellow radio amateur from a long time back, Harry Munro, to assist with the 2004 challenge marathon.  Thinking Cape Wrath, mid May, good weather, nice scenery I said yes.  However, sadly Harry died before the event so we headed North with a degree of sadness but also to remember Harry.

2004 - Had a good time, got the radios to work (big engineering!). Visit the area its beautiful!

2005 - Again had a good time and radio gremlins stayed away - getting slicker will have it cracked for 2006. Only the ferry to conquer!

2006 - All worked well, take this in our stride now.

2007 - except when the weather gods conspire! Rerouted on mainland due to bad storms.

2008 - Back to normal all worked well including the ferry!

2009 - A good event for runners becoming infamous and our radios worked.

While camping out the Cape Wrath lighthouse prior to the 2008 event I met Dixe Wills a travel writer researching for 'Around Britain by Bus' - read his story of Cape Wrath here.  We had a good evening with John & Jay Ure.

More news coverage - John Ure who has been unfailing in his hospitality when I camp out at the lighthouse hit the headlines again as he and his partner Kay endured enforced separation due to the Christmas 2009 snow. Read the Guardian article here.
